2011 WSOP: record breaking first event - $25k heads-up championship

The 2011 WSOP, 42nd annual event, started on May 31 and run through July 19,2011.

The Heads-Up Championship, the first open-event of the 2011 WSOP, drew 128 players to create a prize pool of $3.04 million out of which $851k is dedicated to first place. It’s the most cash ever generated by a heads-up tournament.

Increase in buy-in from $10k to $25k resulted in larger prize pool even though the number of players is half that of last years Heads-Up Championship. The participants include a number of big name players: Daniel Negreanu, Erik Seidel, Tom Dwan, Erick Lindgren, Vanessa Rousso and Patrik Antonius.

The World Series of Poker (WSOP) is a series of poker tournaments held annually in Las Vegas since 1970. when it started with only six players. The winner of each event receives a World Series of Poker bracelet and a monetary prize based on the number of entrants and buy-in amounts. The victor of the main event, who receives a multi-million dollar prize and a bracelet, is considered to be the World Champion of Poker.

Over the years the tournament has grown, both in the number of events and the number of participants. It started with only six players in 1970 and, now, has turned into a grand spectacle, with more than 70,000 entrants competing for more than $180,000,000 in prize money in front of ESPN cameras.

The 2011 WSOP, 42nd annual event, started on May 31 and run through July 19,2011. It is a collection of now 58 distinct tournaments in all variations of poker, with buy-ins ranging from $500 to $50,000 per event. An astounding 380 poker tables are set up in 100,000 square feet of ballroom space at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas where poker players from more than 115 different nations converge in the annual "Woodstock for Poker."

The company that owns the event is Caesars Entertainment, the same company that operates many of Las Vegas' premier hotel resorts. As such, the entire Caesars Entertainment team (formerly Harrah's Entertainment) works together to offer poker players great rates and special accommodations for those playing in the WSOP.

tablet pc, smartphone games taking over PSP/DS territory

According to a new study, over half (52%) of tablet owners, including the iPad, play games on their device. Gaming is the second most popular activity on these devices, behind only surfing the Internet (58%).

Moreover, active gamers are more likely than the average consumer to plan on purchasing an iPad or other tablet in the next three months.

During the last year, there appears to be a significant increase in the number of people who play games on phones. Gamers appear to be defecting from their handheld gaming devices to smartphones to get their gaming kicks:
